The Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives explores the connection between land, sea and human experience. Our mandate is to preserve and present the diverse history of the Sunshine Coast through exhibits, public programming, and community outreach. We have two floors of exhibits, a reference library, an extensive collection of artifacts, and a community archives. The Museum is situated in the heart of Gibsons Landing, in the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and shíshálh Nation.
Job Description:
We are searching for our next amazing Summer Museum Assistant! Join the museum team and have an inspiring summer exploring the history of the Sunshine Coast in this dynamic and creative heritage position. If you are excited about creating a welcoming experience for our visitors while developing a diverse set of museum-related skills, this job is for you!
Our Summer Museum Assistant will assist in all aspects of museum operations including visitor services, gift shop operations, collections management, collections care and documentation, exhibit development, database work, research, and tours. The Museum Assistant will work closely with the Manager/Curator and Curatorial Assistant in a supportive and positive work environment. Under the mentorship of museum staff, you will gain experience in leadership, planning, and event coordination. You will also learn about museum standards and policy, collections care, cataloguing, research procedures, and database software. This position will provide experience in public service, team work, and collaboration.
As an organization, we value positive interpersonal skills, and consider writing and a good sense of humour an asset! In this position, we will find ways to support your passion and creativity in projects that are personally meaningful. Cash-handling experience is also an asset.
Skills Required:
Do you have great communication skills and love working with the public? Are you organized, detail-oriented, and computer literate? Do you love working as part of a team, but also thrive working independently?
Our ideal Summer Museum Assistant will have some post-secondary training in a related field (education, history, anthropology, museum studies, library and archival studies, curatorial studies) and must be between the ages of 15 and 30. We also encourage individuals to apply if they are considering a career in heritage, archives, or library sciences. Candidates will be chosen on the basis of their skill level and ability.
