Telecommunications

Picture this: you are at your cabin at Sakinaw Lake. You appreciate being able to retreat here between busy weeks at work. The peace and natural beauty of your surroundings make your life in the city feel a thousand kilometers away. Yet, it is fast and relatively simple to get here, and it’s easy to be in touch with your loved ones back home. You can even use your high-speed internet connection to work while you are up here, if you need to.

Now picture that again, but without high-speed internet access, your mobile phone or your land line, not to mention the modern highway and car ferry that helped you to get here. Did Vancouver really feel a thousand miles away before?

Modern tools for telecommunications are now so ubiquitous as to be taken for granted, but they changed rural life dramatically as they appeared in the 20th century. Watch this short video vignette about the Gibsons' Telephone Exchange and think about how new technologies have altered life on the Sunshine Coast over the years.
